How to find out who made a website

Four ways, cheapest first.

  1. Look at the footer. Most studios sign their work there — “Site by…”, “Designed by…”, “Made by…”. This is what our crawler reads.
  2. Look at the page source for a comment or a generator tag; agencies often leave one even when the footer is clean.
  3. Search the studio directories for the address — a lot of studios publish their client list themselves.
  4. Ask the site owner. Unglamorous, and it works.

How to find a website designer or developer

Start from work you can see rather than from a pitch. Find a site you like, look up who built it here, then open that studio and look at everything else it signed. The register lists 11 136 studios with at least one signed site.

What counts as a signature

A credit left on the site itself — in the footer, in the markup, in a link back to the studio. We record where we read it and when, and the card for each site shows you that line verbatim. Nothing on this site is self-reported.
